History of collecting hockey cards in the Czech Republic
Czech collectible industry started in early 90s when the former Czechoslovakia became an independent country, after 40 years under communist regime. That was the time for the first NHL hockey cards brands to arrive on the Czech market. No doubts that the Czechs are huge ice hockey fans and dedicated ice hockey nation. Collecting hockey cards became quickly very popular specially among kids.
The first ever issued hockey cards issue was the 1994-95 Czech APS. This issue of Czech elite league (Extraliga) produced by APS company offered first Czech cards of Jaromir Jagr, Milan Hejduk ERC, Martin Straka, Marek Zidlicky, Jaroslav Spacek, Tomas Vokoun and other czech nhl hockey players and stars. There were other czech brands to come. The Czech DS released in 1998. In this set was issued the first ever made hockey card of Patrik Stefan (2001 NHL Czech Draft pick no. 1). After the great success - (gold medal) of Czech ice hockey team at the Olympic games in Nagano 1998 was issued first season of Czech OFS. This set included complete team of the winning squad, insert cards and also true rookie card of Martin Havlat.
The great period of sports cards collecting in the Czech Republic was in years 1999, 2000 and 2001. This was surely influenced by the Czechs Gold successes at the Ice hockey World Championships. That time the popularity of collecting hockey cards reached its highest point. The hobby fans, collectors, dealers were attending the cards shows in Prague, Brno and Bratislava (Slovakia) in big numbers.
The very first hockey cards show was held in Havlickuv Brod. Nowadays, there is the Hockey cards show in Prague held regularly first saturday in a month from 8 - 12am and it has been visiting by 50-100 people. You can get single cards, boxes, sets mostly of NHL hockey cards and also the Czech elite league. Wanted are hockey cards of Jagr team, Czech legends and oddball issues like playing cards, team issues, stickers, food cards etc.
The Czech OFS is the only hockey cards brand released nowadays periodically each year. The OFS focus on hockey cards Czech elite league (Extraliga) and on hockey cards Czech national teams. In 2010 there were issued the Czech CS Legends and in the Retro team emblem in the first half of 2011. These issued are made in limited edition by HC Sparta Prague fan club and devoted to Czechoslovakian hockey legends like Ivan Hlinka, Jiri Holecek, Jiri Kralik, Peter Stastny, Vlastimil Bubnik, Stanislav Konopasek, Jaroslav Holik and others.
Not all of the Czech hockey cards sets and issues are so far part of the Annual Beckett hockey card collector magazine. We belive it will change as soon as possible, after that hockey cards collectors and ice hockey fans get trutful and proper information.
